Kate Powell

Diploma of the College of Occupational Therapists, DIP COT, SIPT Certified, HWTears Provider, Wilbarger Certified, iLS Provider, DIR floortime Provider, Occupational Therapist, School Services Coordinator

Kate completed her Diploma of the college of Occupational Therapists in 1990 at the college of Ripon and York St John, York, England. She has experience in the mental health setting. However, working with children was always a passion so after having her own, she decided it was the right time to move into the paediatric setting. She has lived in various countries and independently set up a paediatric Occupational Therapy service in Oman, Middle East. There, she enjoyed working in the various settings that children can be seen in, whether at school, home, or at the clinic.

Kate has worked with children of all ages who have neurological, sensory, fine motor, developmental, learning, behavioural and/or communication issues. She has experience of running groups and seeing children individually. She sees the role of an Occupational Therapist working with children as as one of guiding the child using the mode of play to engage and motivate them to develop and learn skills they might have previously found difficult. Learning through fun is the best possible way. Kate wants to help educate teachers, assistants and parents on goal setting ideas for their child and sees it as a two way process. She values the interaction and experience of the child within the family and school setting.

Kate has experience in the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum and has advanced training in sensory integration and the Alert programme.

She moved to Hong Kong in 2011 with her husband, Gary and 2 children, Joshua and Leon.

After one month of intensive physiotherapy sessions when he was about one year old, I saw my son greatly improve. Now, he is able to crawl quickly and can even crawl up a slide. He also has more eye contact with us.
