Susan Moriarty – BSc., MPT.

Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology (Canada)
Masters of Physical Therapy (Canada)

Susan graduated from her Masters of Physical Therapy in 2013 from The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Ever since Susan was young she always knew that she was passionate about working with babies, children and teenagers so as soon as she graduated from her physiotherapy degree she went straight into working in the area of pediatrics.

Susan has worked as a physiotherapist with children of all ages and abilities.  Susan spent three years working at a private pediatric physiotherapy clinic in Vancouver. Through this work Susan has become proficient at assessing and treating children with cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, developmental delay, muscular dystrophy, developmental coordination disorder, musculoskeletal conditions and concussion. Susan is also experienced working with infant musculoskeletal conditions such as torticollis and club-foot.

In addition, she worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a large, high-acuity hospital in Vancouver, Canada. There she worked with newborn babies to improve their respiratory health, to achieve developmental milestones and to prevent and treat plagiocephaly (flat-head syndrome).

Prior to becoming a physiotherapist, Susan worked as a behavioral therapist using Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), as a Special Olympics basketball coach and as an adaptive recreation coordinator for children in wheelchairs. Susan is passionate about helping children and teenagers set and achieve physical goals that are specific to the wants and needs of the individual. Susan finds that strong communication between the family, the multi-disciplinary team and the child can make an enormous difference in the child’s physical, mental and emotional success. Through this, Susan believes that every child can maximize their personal potential and learn how to participate meaningfully in their day-to- day life.

"When we first came to see Zara, our son M was not verbal. He was not regulated because he was unable to communicate his needs and wants to us. The first few sessions that we had with Zara was more of getting the trust of our son to play with her and be more comfortable with her. Each session with her was not just about helping our son to communciation to us at home. We were able to practice and extend that therapy sessions from Zara's office to our home because of the ideas and knowledge she has shared with us. After a few months of sessions with Zara, our son M can now verbally communicate his needs and wants to us and has expanded his vocabulary. Because of the trust and patience that Zara has shown to our son, our son is always looking forward to his sessions with her. We are happy with the progress of our son from being non verbal to a child who can now talk to us, read aloud and sing his nursery fhymes. Thank you Zara!"
