Executive functioning coaching is a specialised, goal-directed support service designed to build essential life skills such as organisation, time management, task initiation, and emotional regulation. Through personalised strategies, it empowers students with ADHD, learning differences, or executive challenges to improve their academic performance and gain independence.
What is Executive Functioning?
Executive functioning refers to a set of core cognitive processes, including:
-
Sustained Attention (“Staying with it”): The ability to focus on a task for an extended period without distraction, boredom, or fatigue. Individuals with ADHD often struggle to maintain focus and—critically—find it difficult to recover once a distraction has pulled them away. Resuming focus requires tremendous effort and energy.
-
Response Inhibition: The ability to control impulses, think before acting, pace actions, and filter out distractions. A lack of response inhibition can show up subtly as impulsive reading (skipping words or rushing to guess a multiple-choice answer) or conversational habits like interrupting and blurting out thoughts before someone finishes speaking.
-
Planning & Organisation: Setting goals, outlining tasks, and structuring daily activities efficiently.
-
Task Initiation & Follow-Through: Breaking down large projects into manageable steps to overcome procrastination and maintain momentum.
-
Time Management: Allocating time effectively and consistently meeting deadlines.
-
Working Memory: Holding and manipulating key information over short periods.
-
Self-Regulation & Flexibility: Managing emotions and impulses while adapting to changing priorities and new situations.
-
Goal Setting: Partnering with a coach to define and achieve academic or personal milestones, building long-term confidence and self-reliance.
