Handwriting is an essential skill for children to learn. Did you know handwriting in itself is developed on the basis of different skills and abilities? Missing just one of these would make the task of writing much harder for children. Our Occupational Therapist Crystal breaks down the Handwriting Pyramid for us:
✅ Sensory processing: The brain’s ability to process information received from different senses, including touch, vision, sound, smell, taste, balance etc
✅ Visual perception: the brain’s ability to make sense of what the eyes see
✅Ocular control: the ability to control eye movements
✅Proximal control and stability: The ability to control and stabilise movements from the trunk, head, shoulder and elbow
✅Fine motor skills: The ability to control and stabilise movements from the wrist, hands and fingers
If you feel your child needs support with any of the skills in the pyramid, our Occupational Therapy team will be able to help.
