Pointing is the beginning of a child’s understanding that what he is thinking is independent of another person’s thoughts.
In other words, a child starts to recognize that the thoughts in his mind are only in his mind, and he needs to ‘do something’ in order to share what he is thinking with others around him. This is a crucial stage in children’s development and is related to later language development.
Next time when your child is pointing, let’s take the chance and respond to what he/ she is trying to communicate!
