The Multidisciplinary Team Assessment (MTA) is our most comprehensive assessment. This type of assessment is best suited for children with complex needs. In addition, this assessment can still be tailored further to include other assessment tools if needed. Our team will recommend this assessment on a case by case basis. The advantage of this assessment is that a team of professionals collaborate with each other to ensure we are investigating the child’s strengths and areas of concerns holistically.
Psychoeducational Assessment
The MTA can include either the Psychoeducational OR the Social Communication assessment from the Psychology department. On top of the in-clinic assessments, there will also be a full set of questionnaires to be completed by the family and teachers to understand a child’s social, emotional, and executive functioning skills.
Occupational Therapy Assessment
The Occupational Therapy assessment looks more closely at a child’s executive functioning skills. It can also investigate a child’s sensory preferences, and diagnose handwriting related disorders.
Speech & Language Therapy Assessment
The Speech and Language Therapy assessment flexible approach to Speech and Language Assessments by using a mix of formal (standardised and norm-referenced) and informal assessments to gain an accurate picture of your child’s needs. Speech and Language assessments can look at various areas, including: school-aged literacy/language, articulation/phonology, and feeding assessments.
Psychoeducational or Social Communication Assessment?
The MTA assessment includes all of the standard assessment tools included within either the Psychoeducational assessment OR the Social Communication assessment. Please refer to those pages for detailed information.

Occupational Therapy
Assessment
An Occupational Therapy assessment (OT) can help identify strengths and areas of growth for a child within their day to day life. Typically, an OT assessment includes a detailed look at the child’s executive functioning skills, fine and/or gross motor skills, handwriting, sensory profile, and visual perception abilities. The OT may recommend sending some questionnaires also to further understand the child’s day to day functioning. These questionnaires may be sent to the child, the child’s caregivers, and/or the child’s teachers. We will be in touch with you to communicate this when needed.
An OT assessment typically lasts about 2 hours. An OT assessment at SPOT can be conducted in English, Cantonese and/or Mandarin, depending on the child’s preferred language.
Speech & Language
Therapy Assessment
A Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) assessment aims to identify the strengths and areas of growth for a child in their expressive and receptive language abilities. During the assessment, the SLT will assess a child’s understanding and use of language. The Speech and Language Therapist may use standardised and non-standardised methods of testing to gain a full and complete picture of the child’s language development.
Typically, an SLT assessment can take up to 2 hours. An SLT assessment at SPOT can be conducted in English, Cantonese and/or Mandarin, depending on the child’s preferred language.
Important Notes:
-
An MTA assessment involves multiple professionals. The specialists will all collaborate and meet to discuss your child’s case in detail. As such, please note that MTA assessment typically take longer to finalise.
-
Children with more complex difficulties may benefit from an MTA assessment, but the ultimate recommendation will be made during or after the pre-assessment meeting with the psychologist.
-
Occupational Therapist (OT) and Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) may use different assessment tools for different children to ensure the correct areas are being investigated. Typically, both SLTs and OTs will use both standardised and non-standardised assessment tools.
